Life Lessons I have learned on the bus

6 months ago, if you would of asked me what I thought about city transportation, I would of given some bitchy response that would have been perceived as it being beneath me in almost a mean girl sounding undertone.  I would of  said something along the lines of, “Why do I need to take the bus when I have a car?”  I even remember in my mid 20s getting in to a heated argument with a guy I was dating because he didn’t have a car and lived his life by a bus schedule, and at the time, I never really understood his point of view.
When I obtained a job that landed me working right in the heart of downtown I was faced with the ultimate decision as to how badly I wanted the Pittsburgh Parking Authority to fuck me without at least offering to take me to dinner first.  I was torn between the choice of a purchasing a parking pass for an over-priced, over-crowded downtown garage that the parking spaces are not “one size fits all” and are full of Lexus and Audi driving pricks that feel they have a special sense of entitlement to park like a degenerate assholes and take up 2 spaces to “protect their investment,” or go completely out of my element and choose public mass transportation.  So I decided to choose the latter.
When you are newbie to mass transit, the first step is to try to figure out your route.  This is quite a painful process especially when you have no clue what the hell you are doing, and the cities transit website is confusing as hell.  Trying to figure out the damn bus schedule for the city of Pittsburgh is about as difficult as trying to describe color to a blind man.  I even recruited Chuck’s help to try to help me crack the elusive bus code, and after a solid hour pow-wow that involved yelling, screaming, thoughts of sending a nasty email to the port authority, we figured out the best schedule that I could take.
I remember my first bus ride was like the first day of Kinder garden.  I was overwhelmed with emotion.  What if the bus doesn't come?  What if I don’t get off at the right stop?  What if no one pulls the cord?  Will it still stop anyways?  I was on the verge of a panic  attack during my first ride.   I knew nothing of any rules, proper etiquette, or even carry on rules.  Was this similar to an airplane where I can only have 1 bag per person?  Will I get yelled at for having a lunch bag and purse?
After getting comfortable and observing my surroundings, I slowly began to blend in like a chameleon.  I discovered the hard way in the first month that you don’t talk to people nor make eye contact with anyone before 7:30am because everyone on the bus would much rather wear ear buds and facebook stalk than have a conversation with you.  I also learned that if your ear buds are up too loud, people will ask you to turn your “sinner” music down.  I also learned that apparently if the person sitting next to you does not like the scent of your body spray, they will in fact move to a different seat, stare at you and talk about you to the new person sitting next to them.

By the time spring came, I felt that considering I had been riding the same bus and started seeing some of the same faces during my commute that I had been grandfathered in to the route.  When I started to see the same people every morning, I began to make up nick names for them in my head, and when I would have a bad morning, I would feel a sense of belonging knowing that the likes of “Narcoleptic Ned” ,  “Jerry O’Connell Look-a-like and “Skinny Asian girl who’s body I want to swap” were all my bus peeps, even if they didn't know my name, we were a family.
Aside from my imaginary bus family, it is also a 25 min chance for me to gather my thoughts, get my mind awake and when that happens, I tend to get the most random thoughts and ideas.   Some days, when I am feeling confident that I am looking like a hot business women, I will stand up in the middle of the isle 1 stop prior to where I get off and visualize myself as if I am a hot pirate (Kinda like Penelope Cruz in the last Pirates of the Caribbean movie) and I have just commandeered this bus and I am demanding the driver to drop me off at my final destination so that I can go downtown to pillage.  Another time I had a random thought when I noticed there were 7 men standing in a row in the isle way.  All I kept thinking is how if the bus came to a sudden stop, it would go from “Typical Monday Morning Bus ride” to an Accidental Male orgy on wheels.  Then I had the pleasure to witness what may have made Guinness Book for “Longest attempt to take a  selfie and still fail” Timed at 27 Minutes. 10 attempts to which each picture looked exactly the same as the one before, 1 facebook post only to be removed to make 5 more attempts and re-post on Facebook.
There are also some life lessons that cannot be observed, they have to be lived through….

Lesson #1:  The Bus Stops for No One
Upon the beginning of spring, with the help of my steady income and personal stylist (Pintrest) I decided that at 31, I was going to start to be more fashionable.  With that in mind, I went on a $800 shopping spree to bulk up my closet with pretty much a diverse selection of Wedges, Blazers and colorful shirts.  I set a  goal to obtain every color of the rainbow in wedges, and managed to succeed with the likes of the internet and Ebay.  I have never been a stiletto girl ever.  I own 1 pair of heels that I would get made fun of for repeatedly because they were by far the most comfy but ugliest pair of heels on the planet, so I basically had to reteach myself how to walk in Wedges.  After about a week of twisting my ankle and blisters galore, I finally mastered the art like a champ and no longer looked like a baby giraffe trying to take its first steps. I was feeling good, confident and was on a total power trip, and would determine that If I could make the 1 block walk to the bus stop without twisting my ankle, it was going to be a good day.
The bus was late as usual and it had begun to rain so I literally hurried on to the bus hoping that I didn't look like a drown rat with great looking wedges.  I placed my card  on the unit that registered fares and noticed that there were no seats available up front, so instantly I heard Outkast's song playing in my ever running mind instructed me to, “Ah HA hush that fuss, Shelby you need to move to the back of the bus”  so I did.     As I was heading towards the back I always try to get the seats that are at the very back at the bus, because they vibrate.  Yeah I said it…and now I will probably never get that seat again.  Those seats were taken by other like-minded women that day, and there was one seat available in the middle of a 3 seat configuration that had a pole attached to it.   There was a guy to the left who resembled a young Abraham Lincoln.  He had a long beard that had a hint of red and brown in it and was wearing a business suit.  If he had a Mr. Peanut hat, he would have been fully ready for a civil war re-enactment outing.  To the right was a mid 20’s casual dressed girl that was nose deep in her phone and ear deep in her headphones.  During this entire time, an elderly lady had gotten on behind me so the bus was at a compete stop and I had no problems getting to the back of the bus.  As I reached the top step of the back of the bus that lead to this 3 seat configuration, the bus jerked forward.  It was as if the bus driver had hit a hidden NOS switch and we were about to go head to head over a set of train tracks against Vin Diesel.  When the bus jerked forward, I lost my balance and headed straight for honest Abe.  When you are in a life and death situation such as this, it is human nature to instinctively put your hands out in order to prevent any direct confrontation ,however the only thing stopping me from supermanning this poor dude was the pole.  And that’s when it happened.  Both of my hands grabbed the pole and channeling my inner stripper, the momentum from the jerk of the bus caused me to spin around and I ended up reverse cowgirl in this poor guys lap.  As I looked down and saw his wedding ring, I felt even worse knowing that I accidentally had just given a married man a partial unintentional lap dance.  Face red as all hell, and the entire bus laughing hysterically at what had just happened, I kept apologizing and sat in my intended seat.  Not helping was realizing that my ear buds were up exceptionally loud and I was literally yelling my apology to this man, drawing attention to myself from now both the front and back of the bus.  I sat in silence for the next 25 minutes and literally ran off the bus as quick as I could.  I purposely took the earlier bus for a week to avoid seeing his guy.  Then exactly one week to the day in  the same seat was honest Abe.  I had been lucky enough to get the back seat, so I put my sunglasses on, ear buds in and let the bus ride me to work, only to open up my eyes, and see Abe staring at me with a shit eating grin on his face…

Lesson #2. Don’t Fall In Love with Strangers
Every Friday is casual day, so therefore we can dress down.  Lately dressing down for me consisted of a consultation from Pintrest on what to wear with “Dark Jeans” and just do nothing with my hair.  I figure its Friday, I want to under achieve and it’s a short work day, so no need to go all out, so I took advantage of the opportunity to sleep in an extra 10 min and have a wild child hair day.
The ride started out as normal as it does.  A few familiar faces getting on at the same stops, so naturally I would wish them a good morning in my head.  I have a few ballerinas that live in my neighborhood so I am always excited to see them get on the bus and visualize the all girly idea of what it would be like to be a ballerina, and there is always one particular stop that like 4 of them get on at.  As we pulled up to the stop, I had noticed the girls, but a newbie in  scrubs, which made total sense because it was near a hospital, but even as the bus approached and prior to it stopped I got a glips of him from afar and I was stunned.  He was by far the most gorgeous man I had ever seen, no joke.  He had dark hair and pericing blue eyes, that were even brighter conserving hew as wearing baby blue scribs.  I have only been hot and bothered 2 times in my life by a man.  The first was a gorgeous bartender that I met while traveling in NYC, and now this guy.  He got on the bus and sat 4 rows ahead of me, so all I could see was the back of his head.  Even the back of his head was beautiful.  And for the next 25 min I began to visualize our future together.  He adored me, as I did him.  He always put me first and swept me off of my feet.  He was fair and mature and was never greedy.  The way he proposed was right out of a movie.   Our wedding day was on a nice fall day.  The weather was not too hot and not to cold, it was a perfect day.  My girls were wearing red, and my dress had matching swavarski crystals to match the 5 carat ring that he put on my finger.  It was a parade of beautiful people, and we were surrounded by friends and family in an intimate ceremony in the rose garden.   Then I dreamt of our children and what they would look like.  They would have his eyes, my nose and they would be exceptionally gifted in sports and academics.  Ariel (our daughter) and our son (JR) were raised in home full of love and nurturing.  Then I fast forwarded to our Notebook ending where we were just so much in love that we died in each other’s arms at the ripe old age of 90.
So finally after I pulled my head out of my ass and realized that my stop was coming up soon, I wanted to position myself in front of him so that I could get a better look at Mr. McDreamy’s face.  So I got up and I stood at the front of the bus, appearing as If I was getting off at the next stop.  I don’t know what came over me, considering it was 7:30 am and I had no Vodka in me, but I decided to tell him how gorgeous he was...which ended up being an awkward disaster.  He must had been working the night shift because he had his head down as if he was trying to sleep.  I started to wave at him to get his attention and tried to do it discreetly because I didn't want the entire bus to watch me profess my love to a total stranger, but he wasn't looking at me.  So I had to get closer to this beautiful creature, and it was similar to approaching a rouge tiger in the wild, you don’t know if it’s going to lick you or maul you.  So I finally get him to look up and holy mother of god his eyes, are a blue as the sea and they pierce right though me and it happen…I start to get awkward and can’t talk.  I say, “You are gorgeous” and he smiled, which his smile was perfect, literally perfect teeth, and he says, “I think you may need to get your eyes checked because I’m really not.”  I replied, “Hey normally I get tongue tied and I can’t talk to such gorgeous men and then things start coming out of my mouth I can’t control…”  and I kept going…total diarrhea spewing out of my mouth…I blacked out at the embarrassment of my inability to be able to talk to him like a normal human being but remember picking back up at, “So thank you for making my morning brighter.”  I should of ended all of it with Giggity because that’s how I felt.   In my black out I hadn't realized that there were 4 people observing this horrible attempt to talk to an attractive guy, and a woman who witnessed the whole thing said to him, “Awe that was cute.”  I didn't stick around, I literally ran off the bus as fast as I possibly could and didn't turn back.  I haven’t seen him since.  Chances are I probably scared him off of riding that bus, so I had to change my notebook ending to divorcing him in my mind.  It was very painful, and something I struggled with getting over.  We had to share custody of Ariel and Jr and all of the assets got split in half.  It was a very amicable divorce, and we remained civil towards each other for the kids sake.

Lesson #3.  Don’t Drink and Ride the Bus
It was 3:30 in the afternoon and I was on my way home after getting out of work early.  It was a beautiful sunny day, and I was lucky enough to grab the bus as I was getting to the stop so I didn't even have to wait.  It was like the Cosmo’s were saying, “Shelby we are going to get you home super early today.”    The bus was actually very low as far as occupancy went, maybe 20 people if that were on this bus, it was nice because I had pretty much the choice of any seat that I wanted, so I chose to sit about 4 rows from the front door and 1 row from the mid door considering the very back vibrating seats were fucking taken.  With my earbuds on, I drifted away in to the sounds of my Ipod, as I always do and un winded organizing my thoughts and running through my list of things I needed to do when I got home.    I remember my mom telling me she didn't think I  was a good idea to wear my head phones because I always need to be “aware of my surroundings” and I did what any daughter would do, laugh at her and ignore her warning.
We were mid route when I noticed the people in front of me looking behind me in disbelief as if something was going on.  Trying to process what exactly was happening, I turned around to see a drunk man punching the shit out of another man sitting next to him.   Guy “A” was literally beating the shit out of Guy “B”, and “B” was so drunk that he wasn't even fighting back.  They had been sitting together the whole time, and were even talking to one another when I first got on the bus, when I started to remember, and now “A” is taking his elbow to “B”s head.  I was close enough to all of this that if I would o f had a cardboard sign I could have been a ring girl.   As “A” is elbowing “B” in the head, he slurs, “I told him not to fuck with me” to which an off duty security guard steps in to observe what is taking place.  “B” is now out cold, slouched down in the seat, unconscious.    Sheer panic sets in and my adrenaline starts pumping.  I’m literally dumfounded and really hoping that this is a new version of an Impractical Jokers spin off, because this fight literally was contained in the seats they were sitting in.  There was no craziness across the bus, or innocent bystanders being pushed.  It happened in a 1ft by 1 ft space.  Just as quickly as the fight started, “A” stops, as if a switch had been shut off in his brain and he is just standing there looking around at everyone.  I had my sun glasses on, but I made eye contact with him once and I almost pissed my pants fearing that he was going to come at me next, and I have never hit anyone in my life, so I was questioning myself, “Have I really watched enough episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer to be able to apply it to a real world situation?”
Fortunately and Ironically, the cosmos responded by the busses not running according to schedule and a bus that goes on my same route was directly behind the bus I was on, and made the executive decision to get on the second bus.  Only 4 of the 20 people got off this bus.  Myself, 2 others got on the second bus, and the 4th lady said – direct quote, “Screw this I’m walking, I don’t have time for these drunk n****a’s bullshit”.  Myself and the 2 others that got on the second bus had a pow wow and relived what had just happened, when without any warning, guy “A” tried to get on the bus that the 3 of us intentionally got on to get away from him.  So now guy “A” has followed us on to the second bus, and the bus driver is telling a guy that just beat the shit of out the guy sitting next to him that he can’t get on this particular bus.  I again begin to have another panic attack and try to rethink that scene from that one Sandra Bullock Movie where she talks about “T.I.P.S”  and as if a miracle happens, the guy turns around and leaves and begins to walk away.  So me and my 2 new friends begin to recap what just happnened and try to figure out 1. Why the remaining 15 ppl chose to stay on the bus while the paramedics were being called.  2. Did guy “A” really just walk away? Considering I would imagine fighting on a bus is a crime? 3.  Are we on a hidden camera show?  4.  That was by far the most isolated fight I have ever seen.  5.  What did “B” say that caused “A” to go bat shit crazy on them.    As my stop approached, and I bid my new friends goodbye, I left them with one last revelation, It was 3:30 in the afternoon and I had just witnessed my first city bus drunk fight.  They congratulated me, we high fived each other, I thanked the bus driver for rescuing me and laughed the entire way home.

21 vs 40 - The Male Perspective

Guest Blogger - Chuck

Hi gang!  Well, you all know the drill.  Time to do a little guest writing for Shelby.  Last week she did a nice little comparison of her mindset at 21, and compared it to how she things now at 30.   That was chalk full of some pretty good laughs.  But, I'm sure not only did some of you laugh, but you also said "holy shit, I did the same damn things."   So, of course later on in the week, I got a text from Shelby looking for a guys eye view.  And this works out two because as some of you may know, I'm going to be.....oh god fuck.....40 next Friday on February 1st.

The last couple of months I keep thinking to myself, "how in the hell did I get here at this point in my life?  Am I really 40 years old?  I don't feel it at all."   That's kind of a lie.  Sometimes I do.  I've seen some posts this week on Facebook from friend that made me feel old.  One of my close friends growing up has a son graduating; and old co-worker has son who went to his first winter formal; one of my old Lead Petty Officers (ABH1) posted something about her having a grandson.  I about shit myself.  So, anyhow, I know people say age is just a number, and it truly is, but man how we used to think, and how we think now, are really truly different. (Unlike Jem, who is just simply truly outrageous.)

When I was 21:  Going out

"I'm in the Navy.  I'm on an aircraft carrier.  Chicks f'ning LOVE guys in the Navy.  I mean come on Top Gun proved that right?  Maybe I'll find a Kelly McGillis here in the bay area.  That would rock.  Yeah,  I'm in the fucking Navy.  I'm probably gonna hook up.  This is awesome.   I'm going to wear my navy jacket too so they know I'm in the Navy.  If they ask, I'll tell them I'm a pilot.  That works right?  Wait, one of us have a car.  We have to ride the bus.  That's not going to work out at all.  None of thes girls will talk to us.  No dumbass we're not cops, we're in the Navy.  Great they are walking away?  What the hell, they're supposed to be all over us!  Oooohhhhh somebody lied to me...."

Now that I'm 40:  Going out

"Why am I even going out?  Everyone else I know is at home.  Hell they are probably in bed.  But it's Friday, what else am I going to do?  I gotta meet somebody somehow.  Oh god why won't this girl just shut up! I have no idea what the hell she is talking about.  Oh god please be quiet.  Seriously, you just aren't making any sense.  I think I just got dumber  from listning.  I really gotta stop being the nice guy.  They all seem to want to tell me their life story.  Sweetheart, been there done that.  I'm 40 years old, and I really don't give a shit.  I'm watching the Pens."

When I was 21:  Pics

"Damn, I look so much better than I did when I graduated.  Dropped some weight.  This pic looks great.  Love it.  Gotta do something about the hair though.  These military cuts suck.  Everyone knows we're in the Navy because of it.  Oh well, I still look great though. Feel good too.  Yeah,  i'm killer."

Now That I'm 40:  Pics

"Holy shit does my playoff beard have a ton of grey in it.  Hell I think there is more grey in my beard than my dad has.  Son of a bitch.  I'm not supposed to look that old!  Well, at least the hair looks ok.  Keepin in short. Hides the grey.  Of course, I'm not so sure it will grow back anyway.  Oh well.  Smile for the group pic Chuck. Suck in the guy, and push your face forward. It will hide the double chin.  look down too, and maybe clench your neck muscles.  Oh great, looks like I'm taking a crap.  Can we get a do over on that shot? Sorry everyone."

When I was 21:  Clothing (this applies to when I was 25/26 as well, doing Karaoke at Fredericks in Moon.)

"Dude we found the best clubbing shirts.  Yeah, this is something that says rock star.  Yeah, I'll wear this Friday night.  Mom why the hell are you lookin at me funny?  There is nothing wrong with this shirt.  Whatever, this shirt kicks ass.  It's the style."

Now that I'm 40:   Clothing

"What in the hell was I thinking all those years ago.  I wasted so much money on the ugliest f'n shirts.  I'm so glad I do not have any of them anymore.  Wait, I like this one.  I think it looks good.  Better take a pic and text it to Bonnie, Carie, and Chrissy.  They'll set me straight.  Ok, apparently Bonnie does like button snaps.  Carie said to change my shirt, and to spray my crotch.  Not sure why.  Whatever.  Where the hell were they 15 years ago to help me dress?"

Wait, got one more.....

Shelby decied to give her thoughts on periods.  It's quite obvious that I can't have one of those, so, for the sake of humor.....

When I was 21:  Boners

"For the love of god what the hell?  It's like every time I look at a girl.  Damn calm down junior, she's gonna notice.  She may even point and laugh.  Oh pull the shirt down, hide the hard on.  Better just invest in large shirts because apparently this thing is on overdrive."

Now that I'm 40:  Boners

"Oh thank god the f'ing  thing still works!  Better pull the shirt down to hide it."

And there you have my two cents....later kids! Enjoy the good laugh.

Annoying Things People Do On Facebook - A response to another blog

Annoying Things People Do On Facebook - A response to another blog

Two days ago, I noticed a link that several people posted in regards to a blog entitled “15 things white girls love to do on Facebook (  Click Here to Read This Blog ) I decided to check it out to get an understanding to see the things that I “apparently love to do” since I fall in to the demographic.  Overall the blog was clever, but I really had to disagree with a lot of the points that were made.   I feel that I do way more annoying things than what the blog had listed.
Here is a list of things I compiled with the help of some friends, that I think put things in to perspective a little better for both men and women:

7 annoying things that women love to do on FB
1.    The ducky/kissy face/scissor gang mafia pose.
You can’t deny it ladies, at one point; we have all taken pictures of this, and it’s sad but true.   For me, it’s typically when I’m drunk.   Rather than looking cute, I appear as if I am a wannabe thug with down-syndrome.  Most of the girls that think this is cute are not of legal drinking age, which is still no excuse.  Your faces look like you just smelled a fart.   I would love to hunt down the duck faced hippy bitch that convinced women this was ok, and hook her up with the guy that made shirtless mirror pictures acceptable. Together, these two could give Heidi and Spencer Pratt a run for their money on all levels of worlds lamest couple.

2.      Threaten someone who pissed them off via status message.
Ok great you got beef with someone.  Thanks for letting the whole world know.  Chances are this person isn’t even your Facebook friend, meaning they aren’t going to see any snide indirect remarks that you are making about them.  In order to make this socially acceptable, I would much rather see you call them out to some sort of death match and create a Facebook event for me to attend.  Watching something unfold in real life is more exciting than watching you try to bust a caps lock on someone’s ass via Facebook.

3.      Have entire conversations with their immediate friends via fb wall.
I remember the days before Facebook where if people had a question, they would just pick up the phone.  Now a days, rather than doing that, we find pleasure in the laziness of posting a question to someone’s wall for all to see, which typically comes from our Facebook phone app anyways.   I don’t know about you but posting “Hey, how did your gynecologist appointment go, everything negative?”  on my friends wall sounds so much better on a Facebook wall, than in private.

Song Lyrics that end with a heart character <3
I am a musician; therefore I have a professional respect for good song lyrics.  I don’t understand why women need to reinforce gushy lyrics with a heart at the end.  It’s annoying.  Do you think that by putting a heart at the end of love song lyrics, I'm not smart enough to know your happy about something?  It's Facebook, not an episode of Glee.  Every time I see your little hearts, a love song by Papa Roach comes to mind: "Cut my life in to pieces, this is my last resort <3"

Comment Whores
I love seeing a random girl’s picture pop up on my wall where 100 of my male friends are tagged in it.  Seriously?  Are you that much of an attention whore that you feel the need to tag random strangers to comment on your pic?  Unless you are trying to find participants in your "Facebook 2012 Gang Bang," I suggest you stop trolling for compliments, put some clothes on, stop being a attention whore and join an online dating website.

Boyfriend/Husband Envy

I’m happy that you’re happy. However, is it really necessary  to constantly express your love for him on your status messages?  I’m not saying this because I’m single and bitter that you’re happy, I’m saying this because every time I log in, I could give a shit less reading about how he brought you flowers, breakfast in bed or actually accomplished taking out the trash without you asking.   I'm sure before you met him, you were actually interesting to talk to because you had a life of your own.  Now with your new found penis envy, your life is about as exciting as a blind man at a strip club.

Uploading Pictures/Checking in places

If you were reality TV show worthy, MTV would have contacted you.  Obviously since I do not see a TV show about your life on any cable channels, there is no need to constantly upload pictures of your entire life as it is happening while informing people where you are all the time. Clearly if you have the time to update me as to every little thing you are doing, you don't have much excitement in your life.  Facebook is for friends, they are not your fans.  Stop thinking that you the next  Kim Kardashian of Facebook.  If you have all this free time to constantly be active on Facebook, maybe you do something with your life, like getting a legitimate job and become a useful member of society.

7 annoying things that men do on Facebook

1.  Sports envy
Any female knows that you cannot condone a man for his love of sports.  Unless you intend on turning a gay man straight, it is something that comes with the territory.   Nothing is more annoying than logging on to FB to find your wall flooded with game updates.  Chances are, I'm already watching, I do not need 200 status updates telling me what the score is.  I don't understand the need to express "WOW DID YOU SEE THAT HIT?" Yes I saw it Captain Obvious, I'm watching the same damn thing you are.  If only men could channel that excitement in to more productive things like "I JUST MADE A SANDWICH ALL BY MYSELF." Not only would that be more exciting, it may actually earn yourself a blow job from the girlfriend/wife that you neglect during game time.

2.  Using Facebook as a dating service
All because  we have mutual friends, doesn't mean we should date.  Girls appreciate the idea that you think we are pretty and want to get to know us, but nothing is more creepier than getting a random add from a total stranger who then proceeds to ask you out.  If you are that interested in finding a date, go to an actual dating website.  If you're really interested someone via Facebook, ask our mutual friend to talk to us first.  Scoping FB for women about as sad as  discovering you have 1 daily video left on youporn.

3.  No pictures of yourself at all
How can I tell if I went I know you if the only pictures you have on your profile are of your car, dog, house and favorite sports teams?  This is annoying for several reasons.  You are capable of uploading pictures obviously, however, why feel the need to hide?  Did you gain 100 lbs?  Are you now bald?  We don't care if you drive a Lexus, live in a mansion or love the Steelers.  We want to know if you are who we think you are, because right now all you are is some pompous asshole with a identity complex.  Unless you are Batman by night, that may be why no one is responding to your friend requests.

4.  Girlfriend/Wife Envy
It's definitely cute when a guy can express his feelings toward his partner, however when it's on a daily basis, it becomes less manlier and more gay.  Obviously if you feel the need to tell the world how great and wonderful she is, your happy and that's fine.  It's not fine when you turn in to a babbling idiot who feels the need express your love to her daily, on Facebook - for all of your friends to see.  There is already 1 vagina in the relationship, if you keep sharing your feelings with the world you may in fact grow a vagina of your own. FYI - all of your single friends already probably think you've already turned in to one.

5. Shirtless Mirror Pics
This is the equivalent to the kissy/ducky faces that girls do.  Where I appreciate a nicely toned male body, nothing is more douchier than seeing a half naked man taking a picture in front of a mirror.  This is Facebook, not Myspace.   If you're at the beach or pool, or even doing something productive like working outside that's one thing, but to stage a photo shoot of yourself in your bathroom mirror, your just confirming what the rest of your friends were thinking - you are an absolute tool and probably one of those guys that make fun of the girls that make the kissy faces.  I hate to tell you, but maybe rather than taking a picture of yourself in the mirror, maybe you should just look at yourself, and see what a jackass you've become.

6.  Making a statement and responding with a negative comment
No one likes a Debbie Downer.  If you are going to bitch and moan about being single/lonely/wishing you had someone/having a bad day, don't respond with a prickish comment.  Its "mooch" repellant.  Nothing is more annoying than trying to help a guy cheer up, only for them to bring you down because they are miserable.  It's not the person respondings fault that you are a miserable, lonely son of a bitch in a foul mood.  Maybe you should revisit your outlook on life, grab a glass of wine and call an escort.

7.  Tagging Yourself In places
Again another annoying thing that guys do, however there is a flip side to it.  If I am avoiding you, and know where you are going to be, I now know where not to go.  I don't care if you are the mayor of Erotica or the President of Mt. Washington.  If I wanted to know where you were going to be, I would of politely asked.  I don't want to hear you complain when that crazy ex girlfriend starts showing up places that you are at causing trouble.  You did it to yourself by telling the world where you are.  Until I know that you are as far away from me as possible...I'm content.

Battle of the Sexes – Craigslist Style

All is fair in love and war, or at least it’s supposed to be.  After the last Craigslist experiment, I decided to up the ante.  Men and Women will dispute that one sex is worse than the other when it comes to love.  Women think most men are pigs that have no morals nor know how to treat women.  Men think most women are crazy, obnoxious and gold diggers.  With that being said, I couldn’t think of a better place than Craigslist to test this theory.

With the help of my best friend Mike, we decided to put ourselves out there and see what kind of reaction we would get.

We both posted the same ad and included actual pictures of ourselves:

Hi, I’m new to this site so I don't know what to expect. But I am   looking to date with the potential of more. I think fairly highly of myself. Good morals, good family, a house, lots of friends, and a secure job. I"m looking for someone with similar interests, attractive, similar sense of humor, and a good person in general. If you are interested, message me and we will find out if we have a match!!! Hope to hear from ya!

Mike posted on November 15th, 2011.  He hasn’t been flagged and his ad is currently still on there.  As of November 23, 2011, he had received 3 emails.

Here were the 3 emails that he received…

Hey,

You're 2 cute! Do u date Black women?
I can’t really make fun of this one…I mean she’s up front and honest.  There’s nothing eluding, creepy or weird about it.  Not saying that there could be something off with her upon getting to know her, but right off the bat I got nothing with this one…

Hey what's up? Your really cute stud :) We have a lot in common. We should talk more?

I really can’t make fun of this email, other than the stud comment and that it sounds like a cover letter.  Being that this girl called him a stud, I can’t imagine how old she is.  I believe the last time I ever heard anyone referred to as a stud, it was in the movie Grease, which doing the math…I’m going to guess she’s in her 40’s and possibly 50’s.  Overall, pretty normal other than the fact she says absolutely nothing about herself.

i am 21 i am nice sweet out going fun to be around. Looking to have fun and be safe too. I like to stay in shape. Im 100% real. well, thanks for reading. hope to hear from you soon.

This email is slightly idiotic.  “Looking to have fun and be safe too.”  I may not be a gynecologist, but I can see a when a girl is serving up her vagina on a table.  In her next line she feels the need to mention that she likes to “stay in shape”.  I bet you do…I bet you like to make the best of any situation when you trip, fall, land on some random guys dick and just think “oh hey, I’ll catch a quick work out.”  After reading your first few lines of ridiculousness, I’m going to assume that when you say your “100% real” you are referring to your boobs.  Congratulations on 2 things: 1. For not outgrowing of your “college whore” mentality and 2. Thinking you have the intelligence to communicate with anyone over the age of 25.

And now for the main event….
I posted on November 23rd at 12:30 p.m. I was flagged at 2:55 p.m. that same day. I lasted approx. 2 hours and 25 min and received a total of 41 messages.   Where most of them were totally normal, here are some ones that would care to highlight.

So, tell me more about yourself and what you like to do for fun.
Also, where from? I am in Squirrel Hill, am professional, normal and
VERY fun and am always usually up for doing something .... meet for
drinks? Busy this weekend? I may be free Friday or Saturday evening
.... let me know ... there's a great band playing down the strip ....
that might be fun ...

Dear Fun Police –
Unfortunately, I cannot hang out with you this weekend. I can already see where this relationship will not work.  You see holidays are a chance to hang out with people called friends, which clearly you do not have.   If you were VERY fun, you would have friends that you would already have plans for both Friday and Saturday night to go out.   Being that you are that readily available to meet this weekend, I'm going to assume that you are probably a total tool that will attach  to me because you have no one else. I’m guessing that by the emphasis on the fact that you are VERY fun, you probably are not fun at all and are living in self-denial.  I hope you didn't already purchase 2 concert tickets, because it's not going to be VERY fun for you going alone.

Hi im david I ike to go out and have fun I like to text I have a job I do not have an kid wood like one on down the way I work out u can text me at ------------ I do have pic I can send u I look 4 a gf

Dear David,
Due to the fact that you sent me 1 massive run on sentence, I’m going to have to take this one slow, just like your teachers did when you were in those “special classes”.  I’m glad that you enjoy things such as going out, having fun and texting, however, I envision text messaging conversations with you being very exhausting. You have officially not only mind fucked me, but you have also caused me to go cross eyed trying to figure out what the hell you are trying to say.  “I do not have a kid wood like one on down the way.”  Oh you “wood” like to have a kid down the way huh?  Let me give you a little piece of advice – Unless you learn how to properly communicate with women, the only way you will be producing any children is via the local sperm bank.

Hello there
I'm 24, 6 foot 3, 220 pounds, short brown hair, have glasses and some facial hair
once you email me back id love to send you over a few photos
I live and love going out right here in the strip district, so with tonight being a great night to have a lot fun, i know that you and i would definitely be able to really enjoy ourselves together
- Henry

Dear Henry –
Thanks for your response, has anyone ever told you that you describe yourself like a middle aged Harry Potter?. Unfortunately I will be unable to join you this evening for tonight’s festivities.  I am fully aware that tonight is a great night to have fun, considering when you were 17 sneaking alcohol from your parents liquor cabinet, I was drinking my face off  legally in a bar, but I think you are missing the most important part of my post.  You see as of 12:30 p.m. when I posted this, I developed morals.  Apparently you do not know what that consists of.  My moral idea of a good time does not involve drinking $15 martini’s that taste like toilet water in an area of town that has about as much night life as a graveyard.  “You and I would definitely be able to really enjoy ourselves together.”  Sorry Harry, err I mean Henry.  I’d much rather pick up an 8 pack of AA batteries and enjoy myself alone.

So in conclusion, when it comes to the battle of sexes on Craigslist, there are more men on the prowl than women.  Heaven help them all!

Thanks to Mike Gaydos for being a good sport!
-Keepin it real..& Happy Thanksgiving!

Craigslist -the place you turn to when you have officially hit rock bottom.

Sometimes when I am having a bad day (whether it is work related, relationship related, or I just need a good laugh), I catch myself checking out the personals/missed connections on Craigslist.    The entertainment value of this site trumps any dating website out there.  If you are single and your married friends say: "you're looking for love in all the wrong places," clearly the have not read any of the postings on this site.  Most people that use craigslist as a serious form of meeting people are clearly dating site rejects that have hit absolute rock bottom.  When I say most, I'm not criticizing every single person that uses it, there could very well be some normal people posting personal ads.   I am going to showcase a few ads that I found in Pittsburgh's Craigslist Personal postings, that I feel deserve recognition, based on the absolute nonsense that these people wrote.

I need a place to stay and nowhere to go.Me and my gf dont get along and i want to move out but dont know where to go.I can fix about anything and im very nice to people who are nice to me.Maybe you just need a friend or more its up to you and when i know you are real i will send you a picture of me

                 - The poster of this ad clearly is not looking for love, he's looking for a part time job at an apartment complex that will give him a place to stay because he can fix about anything.  If you can "fix" just about anything, why don't you try fixing your relationship with your girlfriend rather than offering in kind services for a place to stay?  Does your girlfriend not give you a bj after you change the light bulb and that's why you are considering leaving?  You have no place to go? Awe how sad, they have places for that called hotels and homeless shelters.  I bet your nice to people that are nice to you, I bet a lot of people are nice to you, because you sound like you could potentially be mentally challenged.

I have posted a couple times but nothing has come of it. I am just looking for a real normal non crazy girl that could use a little help. I do not want drama or craziness and will not cause you any either. I would love to make a friend and we can help each other with what we need. I am a decent looking nice guy and would love to talk and see if we click... Hope to hear from you soon!

                - So let me get this straight, you want a normal girl that isn't crazy, but needs help?  I'm not sure exactly where the poster of this message is going, but if I could suggest something? You and the guy in the above post should start your own business together because you both seem to have a common interest of helping people and fixing things, and he needs a place to stay.  I'm sure your mom won't mind if you and him bunk up together in the basement, I bet it would be welcoming since your successful brother moved out and got married.  It's almost like this guy is eluding towards a friends w/ benefits situation.  "We can help each other with what we need."  I really hope he gets a response from a girl that needs something outrageous like help with shaving her back or assistance being lifted off her couch because hey, that's what friends do right?  They help each other out!

Do you want to date an older virgin? - 35 (Shaler)

Yes, I am an older male virgin. I'm not, I repeat not, waiting for marriage (I will never get married). Rather, I'm just a pretty introverted, reserved guy who hasn't really tried very hard in the dating realm. I'm looking to change that, and would like to find a wonderful woman in the immediate Pittsburgh area who can accept the idea of dating someone with my inexperience. I'm not looking for sex right away or anything, but I'm also not seeking a long-term relationship. I want to get my foot in the door of dating. While I'm somewhat unsure of posting this, I thought I'd give it a try.

I am about 5'10" and 135 pounds, and would like to meet a woman who is 26-33, relatively thin or average in body type, and who has no kids and doesn't smoke. If you are interested, put "Your Craigslist ad" in the subject line so I know it's not spam.

                - This guy clearly has no game.  You are a 35 year old virgin with no intentions of getting married or being in a relationship, yet your posting a personal ad on craigslist for what exactly?  If he would of just stopped at "I'm a 35 year old virgin" part, he probably could of gotten the sympathy of one girl that would do him after a couple of dates.  By putting it out there that you are not marriage/relationship material, you are basically deeming yourself as a lost cause. Your about as useless as a stationary bicycle - riding you will get me nowhere.  I also love how you have standards.  You want someone who is a thin, with no kids and a non smoker?  I guess beggars can be choosers.  Since you're worried about spam, maybe you should go buy a can of it and try an "American Pie" experience.  Who knows, maybe you won't ever need to attempt to date again!

I want a man i can b happy with nd go places. i may seem like im asking for much but i been gettin no luck and want that to change, it would be nice if u were very close cuz i liv being able to c my man wenever i want, Nd them not having a problem with just eatn me out and not always get sumthin back. U must drive nd kno how to treat a girl tattoos nd piercings r big plus especially dick, nipple, tongue ones. So cum to me babby im waiting. ;)

MUST INCLUDE A PIC OF FACE!!!

                - You sound like a real winner...First off, may I suggest you go back to school and get your GED so that you can communicate like a human being?  "Not fat but now skinny? Was that supposed to say "not", and if it was does that mean you are mid-sized?  Maybe the reason guys don't take you out in public in the first place is because the only language you know is food and sex?  You expect to find a man that will give w/ out receiving? Please!  If I were a guy reading this, I would of instantly forgotten your measly existence on this planet.  As far as your pre-requisites if you can look past the driving part I suggest you lower your standards from guy with a job to prison inmate.  I'm sure they would find you personality appealing.  They have enough free time to both write and sing you a song about love.

I know I've posted before but I'm serious this time. I need to meet a guy...for either friendship or more...who has the same issue that I have. (If you have HSV2, you understand how sensitive the issue is and how apprehensive we can be about disclosing it.) Please don't message me asking, "What is HSV2?" or "Is it contageous?" If you have it, you already know. If you just need to get laid, I won't even bother to respond.

-Ok so I had to Google this.  HSV2 is genital herpes.  Do they not have support groups for this sort of thing?  Of course not!  Let's just take it to craigslist.  I am really pulling for this one though.  If she ends up finding a boyfriend out of this, I may start believing in soul mates.  "I know I've posted before but I'm serous this time" - I bet you are, as serious as genital herpes.   "I need to meet a guy"  - sounds to me like you've met at least one that is unforgettable!  If she does happen to meet a guy with HSV2, I wonder what the dinner table conversation would consist of?  To be a fly on the wall on that date...

I have the beauty, brains, and the personality. That's so hard to come by, especially since I am seeking the same in a guy.
I am seeking a SWM at least 21 and under 35. A guy on the taller, muscular side would be nice.
You get my picture only after I see yours.
I can get hookups anytime I like, so I am looking for someone to take me out and eventually date.
Thanks!
:)

-In High School,  you were probably captain of the cheerleading squad, home coming queen and adored by all of your high school peers.  Welcome to college.   You are now a slutty soroi-tute that has probably banged half of the frat boys on campus.  After your 30th one night stand and 7th trip to the free clinic in Oakland, I'm glad you finally decided to turn to Craigslist to find a boy to "take you out and eventually date."  Your age range cracks me up.  You want to make sure he is at least of legal drinking age, but old enough to drop you off at your dorm in the morning before he goes to his job that he's been working at since you were in 5th grade.    I'm very happy for you that you can get hook up's anytime, but haven't you learned by now that everyone is beautiful when they are drunk?
